The iControl from M-Audio is a tactile control surface for Apple's GarageBand audio manipulation software. It contains endless rotary knobs, mode buttons, solo, mute and record-enable buttons, dedicated transport buttons and a jog wheel that put record and playback functions at the user's fingertips.
The control surface functions using banks of 8 tracks, and additional tracks can be accessed by a simple button push. The iControl is USB bus-powered and no additional power adapter is required. A class compliant driver means easy installation and the unit is automatically recognized by GarageBand. An additional MIDI jack allows users to connect MIDI keyboards and other devices to their Macs.
Key Features |
Hands-on Control |
Making music should be about the creative process, not messing with technology or working with its limitations. That's why studios have tactile controllers for their music software. Most usually cost a lot more than iControl, but GarageBand breaks the mold in a lot of ways. |
Designed for GarageBand |
iControl is the first control surface designed specifically for GarageBand. By avoiding the pitfalls of trying to create a generic controller to work with a variety of software, the iControl design team was able to deliver a tool that provides ultimate control over all the functions used regularly in GarageBand. |
Banks of Eight |
iControl features a bank of controls for eight tracks at a time, including dedicated buttons for solo, mute, record, as well as rotary knobs assignable for volume and pan. When access to more tracks is needed, the up/down buttons assign the eight sets of track controls to a higher or lower grouping of tracks. |
Effects and More |
In addition to track volume and pan, the eight rotary knobs are great for programming and tweaking instruments and effects like EQ and Generator. Assignment is simple. The required track is selected, along with the function within the track that needs to be controlled. The result is the rotary knobs instantly become the control for that module or effect. Switching back simply requires a press of either the Volume or Pan button in the "All Tracks" group. | |
